Nagaland is the state situated in the North-Eastern part of the Republic India. It is the member of The Seven Sisters States of India. The state is popularly known as The Falcon Capital of the World. Nagaland is the state covered with mountains, waterfalls and the divine whether all around. It is one of the smallest state of the country. Nagaland is bounded by the state of  Arunachal Pradesh to the north, Manipur to the south, Assam to the west and the neighboring country of Myanmar to  east. The Capitol of Nagaland is Kohima. Agriculture is one of the main occupation of the state, as the economy of the state is based on agriculture with the estimated GSDP amount of about US$ 4.5 billions. Chromium, Iron, Nickels Cobalt and limestone are found in the state of Nagaland but only low grade coal deposit are mined at present.

The Amur Falcon, known as the worlds longest traveling migrants birds breed in the north east China and the south east Russia. An international team of Ornithologists record that around 1 million Amur Falcon roots in the Nagaland region after travelling around 29000 km. This means that such massive gathering of the migrants birds can be seen nowhere else in the world, which also put Nagaland on the global map, owning to its rich diversity. 

Nagaland earned this title with its successful conservation efforts for these migrants birds. Hence the Nagaland owns the pride to be known as The Falcon Capital of the World

HISTORY


History of Nagaland is not that big and complicated than other states of Indian Republic. According to papers, In the 12th and 13th Centuries, gradual contacts with the Ahoms of present day Assam was established, but this did not have any significant impact on the traditional Naga way of life. However, in the 19th Century, the British captured the area was brought under British administration. In 1947, After independence, this territory was made a centrally administered area in 1957 administered by the Governor of Assam. It was known as the Naga Hills Tuensang Area. This failed to quell popular aspirations and unrest began. Hence, in 1961, this was renamed as Nagaland and given the status of State of the Indian Union, which was formally inaugurated on 1 December 1963 and Nagaland became the 16th state of the Republic India.




CULTURE


Nagaland is counted one of those states which holds the pride of preserve and live with their cultural values. The state holds the maximum tribal communities. Nearly 2 million population of Nagaland has an 88% of Christians occupancy according to 2011 census. Nagaland is one of the 3 state with Christians majority in India followed by Meghalaya and Mizoram. Other religions like Hindu Muslims and Sikhs also live here. The main occupation of the state is  Agriculture. English is the official language of the state. Other cultural language of the state are Konyak, Ao, Lotha etc.

The traditional dress wear by the women of the state are long dress  which tightly wrapped around waist. The shirt available with many variants and the red and yellow stripped skirts called Azu Jangpun. The popular dance of the state is War dance and Zeliang dance. The popular music of the state is Heliamleo, Hereileu and Neuleu.

Kohima is one of the most popular place of Nagaland,also the hilly capital of Nagaland. ‘Kohima’ is the anglicized name given by the British, the original name being 'Kewhira' derived from the Kewhi flowers found in the region. This place is famous for its ethereal environment and untouched beauty, it is a land of folklore passed down through the ages. Situated at a height of 1500 metres above the sea level, it is endowed with quaint hills, emerald forests and a picturesque landscape. It is the go-to place for all you adventure enthusiasts as it is ideal for trekking, camping and hiking. The best time recorded to visit the state is in between October to June.

3. MON


Mon is also one of the best tourist destination of Nagaland known as the land of the Konyak Nagas. In the region around Mon, you will find the last vestiges of the village world that was once Nagaland. You’ll see warriors dressed in all their finery, elderly men with tattoos on their faces, beaded chokers around their necks and little bronze heads that symbolise how many enemy skulls they have claimed. With its greenery and hilly beauty, Meluri is the part of Phek district of Nagaland. Meluri is the land of Pochury tribes who are known for their excellent hunting skills. The rock formation, hills greenery and flora & fauna attract many tourist every year. Meluri is famous for its two lakes named Dzudu and Shilloi. These lakes are believed to have supernatural powers and were avoided by human for a very long time but as a time goes, Shilloi lake has become the popular tourist place and used for angling. 1. AXONE. 


Axone is one of the most popular dish of Nagaland cooked in every household in the state. It is also known as Akhuni. The main ingredient of the dish is Fermented Soyabean. Axone is made in various ways in different household of the state. In some places it is used along with vegetables for making stew and also used to make chutney. It is mostly served as the side dish in powdered form and cake form. These are some popular variety of Axone are  Smoked pork in Axone, Dreid river fish with  Axone, Dreid beef with Axone. 2. AKINI CHOKIBO.


Akini Chokibo is one of the most popular dish of the Nagaland. The word 'Akini' refers to perilla seeds and 'Chokibo' means snails. Snail meat is very popular dish of the state. It is often included in pork dishes but this  dish is a snail delicacy. A bit of lard from the pork and fermented soyabean also known as Axone also added to this dish. Perilla is a type4 od wild herb that belongs to the mint family. The seeds are also used to derive the parilla oil. So whenever you visit the state must try this dish as this show the the  food culture of the state. 




3. GALHO.


Galho is popular dish of the state cooked in the every corner of the state. It is a soupy concoction of rice and vegetables or meat meat. This dish is similar to the  north Indian Khichdi. it is most cooked food in every household of the state. This dish is mostly used an assortment of seasonal greens and is flovoured wih smoked pork or chunks of pork fat. A vegetarian galho is a very simple dish  often garnishhed with just ginger-garlic. This dish gives you and amazing taste and is cooked in every  cornewr of the North East.




4. FISH IN BAMBOO.


Bamboo is the commonly used ingredient. Bamboo Fish is one of the most famous and unique dish of Nagaland. One of the most interesting ways to prepare fish in Nagaland. This dish is most loved by the Ao community of the state. The process for making the dish is quite unique. In this dish the fish is filled inside a bamboo tube with traditional spices and left to bee smoked over fire. This allows the flavours to permeate and offers and aromatic dish. The bamboo shoot is prepared  with herbs and is known as Istuk. The flavour of the dish is very unique and reminds the cultural values of the  state. Must try this dish when you visit the state.





POPULAR FESTIVALS OF NAGALAND


Nagaland is famous for its variety of traditional festivals which is celebrated with full of joy and happiness. So lets discuss about some popular festivals of  the Falcon Capital Of The World. 



1. HORNBILL FESTIVAL.


Hornbill festival is one of the most important and famous festival celebrated in Nagaland. The name of the festival is derived from the state bird of the Nagaland known as Hornbill. This festival is also known as 'the festival of festivals' because of its grandness and festive charm. This festival first organized by the Government of Nagaland in the year of 2000 to encourage inter-tribal interactions. Since it has been held for Seven Days from December 1 to 7 every year. This festival is held in the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, a town near the capital city of Kohima.  The main highlights of the festival include Regional Delicacies, Ethenic Dance Performance, Sales of Tribal Artworks, Games and Religious Ceremonies. Every year people of whole North East region came to witnessed and participate in this festival.




2. MIM KUT FESTIVAL.



Mim Kut Festival is the famous festival of the Nagaland as well as Mizoram. It is a harvest festival celebrated  by the Kuki Nagas. The festival is celebrated on the occasion of successful harvesting of the last crops of the season. The festival is celebrated  every year in the late december and last for two days. The main attractions of the festival are rejoicing dance performances on the pulsating music of large  traditional drums, longhorns and other elegant instruments played by the locals. In honor of the deceased ancestors, the people prepared rice beer, homemade breads, fresh vegetables and even hand made jewelleries. Numerous games, contests, fairs and food stalls are organized to keep the spirits of festivity.




3. BHISU DIMA.


Bishu Dima is the popular festival of Nagaland. This extravagant festival observed by the Dimasa tribe on the completion of the January harvest. The celebration begins with offering the yield of the paddy fields to the Supreme God by the name Brai Sibrai Madai preceded by erecting an elegantly designed gate at the entrance of the village called Phangsla. A Gajaibao is appointed to supervise the ordeals of the festival which also includes looking after the adequate supply of meats of animals and birds that are to be consumed on the day of the great community feast. The traditional songs are sing by the men called Kharam. The night of the festival spent by dancing and feasting their traditional Attries. The day of spent by playing games like long jump, high jump and stone throwing. This festival fills everyone's heart with full of joy and happiness.
  



4. MOATSII MONG.


Moatsii Mong is one of the most popular festival celebrated by the Ao people of the Nagaland. Unlike Other  agricultural festivals, this festival is festival is celebrated after cleaning the fields and sowing of seeds. The duration of the festival is 3 days and is celebrated in the first week of May. In the celebration of the festival they burn fire called Sangpangtu, the men and women sit around the fire and wear their best attries and women served wine and meat to everyone. This extremely rejoicing session of storytelling ends with a tug of war game between the men and the women in which the women always win. The men say that their womenfolk's beauty is so enchanting that they get absorbed in it and forget about the play. The festival brings joy and happiness.
