Punjab is a state in India, sharing its border with Pakistan. The word Punjab is the combination of Indo-Iranian words :- PANJ (Five) and AB (water) , is the reason that this state is known as The Land Of  Five  Rivers. These five rivers are the tributaries of the Indus River  :- Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. 

The two main religions followed in the Punjab region are Sikhism and Hinduism. Other religious groups like Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism are also found. The people of Punjab is known as Punjabis, and their primary language are Punjabi. 


History

Punjab was created in 1947, when the partition of India divide the former Raj province of Punjab between India and Pakistan. The Muslim majority western part of the province became Pakistan's Punjab and the Sikh majority western part became the India's Punjab state. The real founder of present Punjab is Banda Bahadur Singh. Punjab faced many displacement of peoples and a large number of communal Voilence because many sikhs and hindus live in west (Pakistan's Punjab) and many muslims live in east (India's Punjab).

Culture

Punjab has one of the oldest culture in the world. The songs, poems, food, festivals, dress, education, monuments, warfare and the sacrifice value show the vast culture of Punjab. Punjab have its own regional language called Punjabi is famous globally. After Punjab, Punjabi is mostly spoken in the country like Canada and England. The food of the state is famous for its unforgettable taste. 

Also punjab have its traditional dress which is Kurta pajama and Tehmat in the popular Muktsari style for men and Punjabi Ghagra which is replaced by Salwar Suit for women.

1. Golden Temple in Amritsar.


Whenever you hear the name of Punjab, the first place came in your mind is Amritsar. It is a city of Punjab, 28 kilometre from the border with Pakistan. This city is famous for the Golden Temple (Harmandir sahib) , is the holiest place of the Sikh religion. Golden Temple is decorated with gold plated walls and the dome, surrounded by the sacred 'Amrit Sarovar kund (lake) ' where pilgrims came to worship the god. Daily more the 50,000 people feeded in gurudwara known as Langar. 


2. Jallianwala Bagh. 

Jallianwala Bagh is a historical garden in Amritsar. It is preseved in the memory of those who wounded and killed in the Jallianwala massacre, occurred on the festival of Baisakhi on 13 April 1919. On the order of General Dyer, British troops opened fire on the unarmed civilians who came to celebrate the festival. There is a museum in the Garden which built in the memory of those people.

3. Rock Garden in Chandigarh.

Chandigarh is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. The city is known as the best planned city in the country. This city is also famous for the Rock Garden. It is founded by Nek Chand Saini, the government official who start built this garden in his spare time in 1957. This garden is also famous for the most eco friendly garden in the country because it is made up of recycled material from the domestic and industrial waste.

4. Patiala.

Food

1. Makki ki roti and Sarso ka saag.



Makki ki roti and sarso ka saag is the most popular Punjabi dish. It is one of the most eated dish in every Punjabi family. It is very healthy and give essential nutrients which requires in winter. It is served with the white butter and spicy pickles which increase the taste of the dish. When you think about this dish, surely gives you mouth watering experience. 


2. Amritsari kulcha.

Amritsari kulcha is one of the very popular dish in Punjab cuisine. Basically, It is a upgrade version of Naan. It is famous for its crunchy and spicy texture, served with Chole and a glass of Lassi. This dish come in many varieties like Aloo kulcha, Masala kulcha and paneer kulcha etc. When you visit Punjab, must try this dish. 


3. Chole-Bhature.

Chole-Bhature is one of the most popular dish and also become the identity of Punjab.this dish is found in every corner of punjab and famous worldwide. Batura is made up of flour and milk which makes it different from regular poori. This dish is served with spicy pickles and onions which enhance the taste of the dish. 


4. Lassi.

Lassi is known as the lifeline of punjab as it is the most drinking beverage of punjab and the north India. It is made of curd and sweet in taste. It is served in a big mud glass with cream on the top which gives you an ultimate pleasure and freshness.

Festivals

Punjab have many traditional festivals which is very famous in the world also. So lets discuss about the festivals celebrate in Punjab. 


1. Baisakhi.



Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is the most popular festivals celebrated in Punjab at the beginning of the new spring and also known as the New Year of Hindus. It signifies the end of the harvest season in India. It is celebrated on 13/14 April every year. In Punjab, on this day Sikhs take bath in the holy river and go to the gurudwara to attend the prayer. This is the festival of joy and happiness and celebrated in mostly part of India. 


2. Lohri.

Lohri is the famous folk Festival celebrated in Punjab and the Northern part of India. Lohri is celebrated on 13 January every year. In yhe celebration of Lohri, people of Punjab wear traditional dresses and sing the folk songs. The holy fire burn on this day and people worship and pray to their deities. It brings the joy and excitement in everyone's heart. 


3. Gurupurav.



Gurupurav or Guruparv, is the sikh festival celebrated in punjab and every part of the world by Sikhs. Its is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji, the first guru of the Sikhs and the founder of the sikhism. 


4. Teej.

Punjabi Teej or Tiyaan is a famous festival celebrated in Punjab by women. This festival is starts on the third day of Saawan Mass and end on Saawan purnima, the total span of 13 days. In this festival married women spend all the month of Saawan in thier maternal home. In this festival, women swings on trees, dance together in the traditional form called Giddha.
