Sikkim is the state situated in the eastern part of India. Sikkim is also known as the Drenjong, the Tibetan name of the state. Sikkim is so close to Siliguri corridor near Bangladesh. The state shares its border with Tibet, China, Bhutan, Nepal and the Indian state of West Bengal. Sikkim is the second smallest state of India with Gangtok as the capital of the of the state. The state has the dramatic landscape that includes India's Highest mountain, Kanchenjunga with the height of 8,586 m. Sikkim is the home of many beautiful waterfalls, Glaciers and a large varieties of flora and fauna. The economy of the state is based on Agriculture. The GDP of the state is the third smallest GDP with the estimated amount of about US$ 4.6 Billion. The per capita income of the state is about 3.17  lakh.

HISTORY

The history of Sikkim is also very unique like every state of the India. The history of the state was first recorded in the 17th century with the contact between the Hindus and the Tibetans, followed by the establishment of the Buddhist Kingdom. The name of the state is derived from Limbu word 'Su Him' means the New House. The kingdom of the  Sikkim was first established in 1642 by the Namgyal Dynasty. Phuntsog Namgyal, the first Chogyal (temporal and the spirtual king) came from the Bhutia community. When British came into power, they captured Darjiling from Sikkim in 1835. Inscidents between Sikkim and the British led to the annexation in 1849. The treaty of Anglo - Sikkim were signed between British and Sikkim in 1861. The treaty established Sikkim as the Pricely state under British rule. 

After the end of British  rule, the Sikkim became the territory of India. In 1975 referendum, more than 97 percent of the vote was in favour of merge Sikkim in India. In May 16 1975, Sikkim became the 22nd state of Republic India. 





CULTURE


Sikkim is the state famous for its rich variety of cultural togetherness and the brotherhood nature. As we know that Sikkim was occupied by the three Tribal groups  named  Chang, Naongs and the Mon. But with the time many other groups came in Sikkim like Nepali, Lepchas and the Bhutias etc. The majority of the people are Hindus and the Budddhist. The Nepalis and the  Tibetans are  also of the major population of the state. The official language of the state is Sikkimese, English and  Nepali also the majorly spoken language of the state.

The state holds its cultural values and preserve it as seen in the day to day life of the state. The popular dress of the state is known as Kho, It is a hug cloak like cloth tied at the neck and  tightened around the waist, it is very similar to Tibetan dress. The popular dance of Sikkim is  Murani, Neh-Nah etc and the popular music of the state is Tamang Selo. You can feel the beauty and the culture of the  state by exploring about the popular Destinations, food and festivals of the state.

1. GANGTOK.

Gangtok is on of the most popular destination and  the capital of  Sikkim. Gangtok is considered one of the  most  beautiful Hill Station in India. The city is the perfect amalgamation cultural, scenic beauty and the modernization. It give the majestic view of Mount Kanchenjunga. Sikkim is blessed with the kind of cultural and historical significance. the best time recorded to  visit the state is between March to Mid - May.

2. NATHULA PASS.

Nathula Pass is one of the  most popular destination of the  Sikkim. It is one of the highest motorable pass in the world locating at the height of 4,310 m from the sea level.  This place is most important as politically because  this place connects India  to Tibet which create an amalgamation  of Indian and Tibetan culture around the  place. The beauty and the  views of the place attract many visitors every year. You will need special permission to visit the place.

There are several place to explore when you visit the Nathula Pass:-

    3. KANCHENJUNGA BASE CAMP.

    Kanchenjunga Base Camp is one of the most popular destination of Sikkim. As we know that Kanchenjunga is the third highest peak of the  world. You feel the unique experience by camping on the mighty mountain. The view and the scenic beauty of the place cannot define in words. If you are a adventure lover person must try this place as you can enjoy the trekking experience which start from the Dzongri, which is the last road lay of the peak.

    4. TEESTA RIVER.

    Teesta River is also one of the most famous and beautiful place of Sikkim. You can catch the glimpse of Sangam of Teesta river along with the tributary of Rangeet River whenever you travel the majestic place. In winter, the beauty of the place is increase when the river appears in the frozen state and turn into ice and in summer, the beauty of the place enhance with the blooming flowers and the shiny water of the place. you can also enjoy the experience of river rafting and boating.

    POPULAR FOOD OF SIKKIM

    Sikkim is famous for its variety  of food which give you and unforgettable taste. The cultural values is seen in the every food of the state. So lets discuss about the variety of popular dishes of Sikkim.


    1. THUKPA.

    Thukpa is one of the most popular dish found in every corner of the Sikkim state. Thukpa is a typical noodle soup of Tibetan origin that has found and most loved dish  in Sikkim. Thukpa is the combination of the health and the taste at the same time. It is made of rice noodle dipped in soup with added spices and is available in both Veg and Non Veg. Thukpa is almost available in every Cafe and hotels but in my advice, It is better to try it from local vendors as they provide you the best authentic taste.


    2. GUNDRUK.

    Gundruk is one of the most popular dish found in every corner of the state. It is the Nepalese origin dish and one of staple food  of Sikkim. This dish is totally vegan made of leaves which is good for boosting the metabolism of the body. The taste of dish is very delight and hard to forget. The traditional method of the dish  is made in the earthen pot , but now people using other methods to make the dish. Whenever you visit the state, must try this dish.



    3. DHINDO.

    Dhindo is one of the most famous dish of Sikkim. Dhindo is tasty and the healthy dish made of Millets and ground flour by boiling water and slowly pouring in buckwheat. The mixture is stirred until the paste get sticky. Then the paste is rolled into balls, dipped into lentil soup or chutney and swallow till the millet stick properly. This tasty dish consumed on daily basis in the Nepal and the Sikkim region. The dish is so amazing that it become the most eated dish of the state.




    4. SINKI.

    Sinki is one of the traditional dish which is very popular in the state. This dish is very taste and  still preserved its traditional value as the making process of the dish is unique and old. This dish is very similar to Gundruk but it is made of radish taproots. These radish are chopped  and put into bamboos and pressed over with straw then covered the bamboo with mud and left it about a month. After the month , you can feel the unforgettable taste of the Sinki.


    The dish of the Sikkim state is  followed the Nepalese and the Tibetan culture and very delight in taste. So whenever you visit the state must try these dishes. 





    POPULAR FESTIVALS OF SIKKIM


    Sikkim is famous for its variety of popular festivals which is celebrate with full or joy and happiness. So lets discuss about the various popular festivals of the Sikkim.


    1. LOSOONG FESTIVAL.

    Losoong Festival is one of the  most popular and important celebrated in Sikkim and the North East states. It is popularly known as the Sikkimese New Year. This festival is celebrate on for welcoming the season of Harvest. On this Day, streets and the shops are decorated and many traditional folk dances, rituals  and music performed by the local people of the state. this 4 days long festivals is popular in whole India as many visitors came year to join the festival and experience the Sikkimese culture. The festival mesmerizing the north eastern culture and the  importance of north eastern states in  India 



    2. BHUMCHU.

    Bhumchu is one of most sacred festival of the state. The word Bhumchu means 'Scared  Pot of Water'. Like other Sikkimese festivals, this festival is celebrated with full of joy and happiness. On this day, the monks at Tashiding Monastery opening the sacred vase of water.  This vase used to predict the future and generate forecast of the impending years. On the next day the pot is refilled with the water from the sacred river and sealed to be opened next year. To see the magical festival of the state, many visitors came every year to experience the joy and  the happiness at the time of the  festival.




    3. TIHAR.

    Tihar is the famous festival of the  state  celebrate at the time of Diwali and this festival also known as the Diwali of the  Sikkim. The duration of this amazing festivals is about 5 days. On the  first day, The  people of the state worshipped the crows, also known as the  symbol of sorrow and sadness. The second day  of the festival known as the Kukkar Tihar. on this day people worshipped the dogs and offer them food and tilak. Each day of the festival  is celebrated by worshipped of different animals. This festival  is celebrated with full of joy and happiness and giva a message to the society to save animals.




    4. MANGAN MUSIC FESTIVAL.

    Mangan Music Festival is one of the most popular  festival celebrate in the Mangan of Sikkim. The duration of the festival is 3 days and celebrated in the month of December every year. The aim of the festival to promote the regional music and spread the importance of music. The band came and participate in the fest from different regions of North East. The crafts and the exibitions take place which increase the joy of the festival. people from different parts of the country came to witnessed the music festival. The Hills, Winter, music and the mountains make the deadly combinations and  enhance the joy of the festival.
